Human Functional State and Individual Stress-Resistance

Abstract

The talk is devoted to the recent development in concept of human functional state (HFS) elaborated in the framework of activity regulation approach (Leontiev, 1975; Leonova, 1985; 1994, 2003). Starting with analysis of regulatory mechanisms of on-going tasks’ performance, we plan to discuss methods of evaluation of HFS multilevel structure (acute and chronic fatigue, monotony, emotional tension, etc.). The emphasis will be an integration of two hitherto independent lines of research – the HFS dynamics vs. the individual’s abilities to cope with stressful life events. A new model for evaluation of individual stress-resistance, elaborated on the base of “state-trait paradigm”, will be described (Leonova, 2008, 2010). The results of our recent experimental modeling studies (task switching under influence of negative emotional feedback) and more traditional psychometric research (carried out on the personnel working in highly demanding conditions) exemplify the diagnostic properties of this integrative model. We also plan to shortly address the methodology of using the model for correction of currently negative HFS and compiling health/human resilience promotion programs. New data on the genetic involvement in some but not other components of individual stress resistance based on a recent study with a large sample of twins pairs (Leonova et al., in preparation) will be presented at the end of this talk.
